He is the founder and CEO of AgeX Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing novel therapies for age-related diseases. He is also the founder and chairman of BioTime, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on regenerative medicine and stem cell research. West was born in Niles, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in biology. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California, Berkeley. West began his career in the biotechnology industry in the early 1980s, working as a research scientist at Genentech. He then founded Geron Corporation in 1990, where he served as president and CEO until 1997. In 1998, he founded BioTime, Inc., and has served as its chairman since then. West has been a venture capitalist since 2000, and has invested in numerous biotechnology companies. He is also a member of the board of directors of several biotechnology companies, including AgeX Therapeutics, BioTime, Inc., and Ocata Therapeutics. West has received numerous awards and honors for his work in the biotechnology industry, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2000, the California Biotechnology Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, and the California Life Sciences Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
