Fonfara was born in Stevensville, Ontario, Canada. He began playing music at an early age, and was influenced by jazz, blues, and rock. He attended the University of Toronto, where he studied music theory and composition. In 1967, Fonfara co-founded the band Rhinoceros, which released several albums and toured extensively.
