Michael J. Lewis is an American architectural historian and professor emeritus at Williams College. He was born on 11 January, 1939 in New York City. He received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1960 and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. Lewis is the author of numerous books on architecture, including The Gothic Revival (1968), The Politics of Architecture (1977), and The New World of James Fenimore Cooper (1982). He has also written extensively on the history of American architecture, including The Architecture of the United States (1981) and American Architecture (1984). Lewis has been a professor at Williams College since 1965, and was named professor emeritus in 2004. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia. Lewis has received numerous awards and honors, including the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award from the Society of Architectural Historians in 1975, the Henry-Russell Hitchcock Award from the College Art Association in 1977, and the Alice Davis Hitchcock Lectureship from the Society of Architectural Historians in 1981.
