Michael Smith is an American television sports commentator and sportswriter. He is currently a host on ESPN's SportsCenter and a contributor to ESPN's First Take. He is also a regular panelist on Around the Horn. Smith was born on August 1, 1979 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a degree in journalism and mass communication. Smith began his career as a sports reporter for the Winston-Salem Journal in North Carolina. He then moved to the Raleigh News & Observer, where he covered the Carolina Hurricanes and the ACC. In 2006, Smith joined ESPN as a SportsCenter anchor and contributor to ESPN's First Take. He has since become a regular panelist on Around the Horn and a contributor to ESPN's SportsNation. Smith has won several awards for his work, including the National Association of Black Journalists' Salute to Excellence Award in 2008 and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' Salute to Excellence Award in 2009.
