Michael W. Burns is an American businessman and former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in economics. He began his career at Martin Marietta Corporation in 1981, and was appointed president and chief operating officer of Lockheed Martin in 1998. He was appointed chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin in 2004, and served in that role until his retirement in 2012. Burns has served on the boards of directors of several companies, including the Boeing Company, the National Geographic Society, and the University of Maryland. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Academy of Engineering. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Johns Hopkins University and the board of directors of the Atlantic Council. Burns has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the National Security Medal, and the Order of the British Empire. He was inducted into the Maryland Business Hall of Fame in 2013.

In 1998, Michael Burns ran for reelection, and was defeated. Democrat Mary Ann Love and Republican James E. Rzepkowski were both reelected, but Sophecleus finally ran for election and won.

1994

In 1994, Michael Burns won election as one of the three delegates for District 32 in the Maryland House of Delegates. In that year, only one of the incumbents ran, one Victor A. Sulin, who was defeated. The other two incumbents, Patrick C. Scannello and Theodore J. Sophocleus did not run again. (Sophecleus had replaced a previous delegate, Tyras S. Athey, when he resigned to become Secretary of State of Maryland).
