Michael Wex is a Canadian-born author, lecturer, and translator. He is best known for his books on Yiddish language and culture, including Born to Kvetch and Just Say Nu. He was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, on September 12, 1954. Wex studied at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975 and a Master of Arts degree in 1977. He then moved to New York City, where he worked as a translator and editor for Yiddish publications. He also taught Yiddish at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and at Columbia University. Wex has written several books on Yiddish language and culture, including Born to Kvetch, Just Say Nu, and How to Be a Mentsh (and Not a Shmuck). He has also translated works by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Sholem Aleichem, and other Yiddish authors. Wex is married to the writer and editor, Miriam Udel. They have two children.
