Michal Struss is a Czech-born animation director and visual effects artist. He is best known for his work on the films The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), The Golden Compass (2007), and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012). Struss was born in Handlova, Czechoslovakia, on 18 June 1975. He studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he graduated in 1999 with a degree in animation. Struss began his career in the Czech Republic, working as a freelance animator and visual effects artist on several films and television series. In 2003, he moved to London, where he worked as a visual effects artist on the films The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) and The Golden Compass (2007). In 2012, Struss was hired as the animation director for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. He has since worked on several other films, including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). Struss currently lives in London, where he continues to work as a visual effects artist and animation director. He is married and has two children.
