Michel Auder is a French-born American filmmaker, photographer, and video artist. He is best known for his pioneering work in the field of video art, which he began in the late 1960s. He has directed over 30 films and video works, and his photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Auder was born in Soissons, Aisne, France in 1945. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the École des Arts Décoratifs in Geneva. In the late 1960s, he began experimenting with video art, and in 1971 he moved to New York City, where he continued to work in the medium. In the 1980s, Auder began to focus more on documentary filmmaking, and his films often explore the lives of marginalized people. His films have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Centre Pompidou, among other venues. Auder has also collaborated with other artists, including the musician Lou Reed and the artist Cindy Sherman. He has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the Locarno International Film Festival and the Grand Prix at the International Video Festival in Locarno. Auder currently lives and works in New York City.
