Michel Hidalgo is a French former football player and manager. He was born on 22 March 1933 in Leffrinckoucke, Nord, France. He is best known for his time as the manager of the French national team from 1984 to 1992, during which time he led the team to victory in the 1984 European Championship. Hidalgo began his career as a player with Lille OSC in 1951, before moving to Stade de Reims in 1954. He made over 200 appearances for the club, and was part of the team that won the French championship in 1958. He retired from playing in 1965, and began his managerial career with Stade de Reims in 1966. Hidalgo was appointed manager of the French national team in 1984, and led the team to victory in the 1984 European Championship. He also led the team to the semi-finals of the 1986 World Cup, and the quarter-finals of the 1988 European Championship. He left the post in 1992, and was replaced by Aimé Jacquet. Hidalgo has been inducted into the French Football Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1984. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in French football history.
