Michel Rocard was a French politician who served as Prime Minister of France from 1988 to 1991. He was a member of the Socialist Party and was the first member of the party to serve as Prime Minister since 1981. He was also the first French Prime Minister since the Second World War not to be a member of the Gaullist party. Rocard was born in Courbevoie, Seine, France, on 23 August 1930. He studied at the École Nationale d'Administration and the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris. He began his career in the civil service, working in the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Interior. Rocard was elected to the National Assembly in 1967 and served as Minister of Agriculture from 1981 to 1983. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1988 and served until 1991. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms, including the introduction of the 35-hour work week and the introduction of the RMI (Revenu Minimum d'Insertion) welfare system. Rocard retired from politics in 1997 and died in 2016 at the age of 86. He was widely respected for his intelligence and his commitment to social justice.
