Miguel Ángel Asturias was a Nobel Prize-winning Guatemalan poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, and diplomat. He was born on October 19, 1899, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He was the son of a lawyer and a schoolteacher. He studied law at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala City and later studied anthropology at the Sorbonne in Paris. Asturias is best known for his novels, which often combine elements of Mayan mythology and folklore with social and political themes. His most famous works include El Señor Presidente (1946), Hombres de Maíz (1949), and Leyendas de Guatemala (1930). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967 for his "rich and vital narrative art, deep-rooted in the national traits and traditions of Indian peoples of Latin America." Asturias was also a diplomat, serving as Guatemala's ambassador to France from 1954 to 1960. He died in Madrid, Spain, on June 9, 1974.
