He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with a variety of artists, including Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, and Ricky Skaggs. Barnett was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1948. He began playing the fiddle at the age of five and was soon performing with his family's band, The Barnett Family. He attended the University of Tennessee and studied music theory and composition. In the early 1980s, Barnett joined the bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters, with whom he has released several albums and toured extensively. He has also released several solo albums, including "Fiddle Tune X" (2006), "Fiddle Tune a Day" (2008), and "Fiddle Tune a Week" (2009). Barnett has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, and The Chieftains. He has also composed music for television and film, including the theme song for the television show "The Waltons". Barnett is currently a member of the bluegrass supergroup The Earls of Leicester, which also includes Jerry Douglas, Shawn Camp, and Charlie Cushman.
