Mike Nichols was an American film and theatre director, producer, actor, and comedian. He was born in Berlin, Germany, to a Russian Jewish family. He began his career as a comedian in the 1950s, and went on to become one of the most acclaimed directors of his generation. He won an Academy Award for Best Director for The Graduate (1967), and was nominated for seven more. He also won nine Tony Awards for his work in the theatre.
Nichols was known for his versatility, working in both comedy and drama, and for his ability to bring out the best in his actors. He was also known for his improvisational style, often allowing his actors to improvise their lines. He was a mentor to many young directors, including Steven Spielberg and Mike Newell.
Nichols died in 2014 at the age of 83. He was survived by his wife, Diane Sawyer, and their two children. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

On Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates Jr. (2010), Nichols learned he was a distant relative of actor Meryl Streep. A few years later on a different Gates show, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2012), he also found out that he was related to Albert Einstein. They would have been 3rd or 4th cousins several times removed.
