He is best known for his achievements in weightlifting, having won multiple gold medals in the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics. He began his weightlifting career in 1945, and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. He won his first gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, and followed it up with another gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He also won multiple gold medals at the Mediterranean Games, and was the first Egyptian to win a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships. In addition to his weightlifting career, Abdel Kerim was also a successful businessman. He owned a number of businesses in Egypt, including a construction company and a restaurant.
