He is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the highest award for distinguished service in the Indian Army. Whig joined the Indian Army in 1945 and served in various capacities, including as a platoon commander, a company commander, a battalion commander, and a brigade commander. He was also a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka in 1987. He retired from the Indian Army in 1975. Whig is married to Mrs. Usha Whig and has two sons, Major General Rajinder Whig and Colonel Rajiv Whig. He currently resides in Chandigarh, India.
