Morton Subotnick is an American composer, performer, and pioneer of electronic music. He is best known for his 1967 album Silver Apples of the Moon, the first electronic work commissioned by a record label. Subotnick has composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo instruments, and interactive media. He has also written extensively for film, television, and theater. Subotnick was born in Los Angeles, California, and began studying music at the age of seven. He studied composition at the University of California, Los Angeles, and later at Mills College in Oakland, California. He was a founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center, where he worked with composers such as Pauline Oliveros and Ramon Sender. Subotnick has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of California, San Diego, and the California Institute of the Arts.
