Mostafa El-Abbadi is an Egyptian historian and professor emeritus of history at the University of Alexandria. He is best known for his work on the history of the ancient world, particularly the Greco-Roman world. He has written numerous books and articles on the subject, including The Life and Fate of the Ancient Library of Alexandria, which won the UNESCO-Sharjah International Prize for Arab Culture in 2000. Mostafa El-Abbadi was born on 10 October 1928 in Cairo, Egypt. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Cairo University in 1950 and his doctorate in history from the University of Paris in 1956. He then taught at the University of Alexandria from 1956 to 1991, when he retired as professor emeritus. Mostafa El-Abbadi has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the UNESCO-Sharjah International Prize for Arab Culture in 2000, the Order of Merit of the Republic of Egypt in 2001, and the Order of Merit of the Arab Republic of Egypt in 2004. He is a member of the International Association of Egyptologists and the International Association of Byzantine Studies.

He was married to the literary critic and scholar Azza Kararah, who died in 2015. His father, Abdel-Hamid El-Abbadi, was a historian and founding dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alexandria. He had two children, a son, the computer scientist Amr El Abbadi and a daughter, Dr Mohga El-Abbadi.

1986

After graduation, El-Abbadi became a lecturer and then a professor in Greco-Roman studies at the University of Alexandria. Ismail Serageldin credited him with initially proposing the revival of the ancient library of Alexandria. The project was embraced by UNESCO in 1986, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was completed in 2003, but he was not invited to the opening. He was critical of some of aspects of the project as realized by the Egyptian government, telling the New York Times that the library was at risk of becoming "a cultural center" rather than fulfilling its "promise as a world-class research center." He authored the Library of Alexandria entry in the Encyclopædia Britannica.
