Mother Maybelle Carter was an American country musician and songwriter. She was a member of the original Carter Family, which was one of the first commercial country music groups. She was also a pioneering guitarist, and is credited with developing the "Carter Scratch," a guitar technique that is still used today. Carter was born in Copper Creek, Nickelsville, Scott County, Virginia, USA on May 10, 1909. She was the daughter of Melvinia and William Addington. She was the oldest of eight children. Carter began playing the guitar at the age of 10, and by the time she was 14, she was performing with her family at local dances and parties. In 1927, she married Ezra Carter, and the couple had three children. In 1929, the Carter Family recorded their first album, and it was an instant success. The group went on to record over 300 songs, and their music was influential in the development of country music. In the 1950s, Carter began performing solo, and she released her first solo album in 1956. She continued to record and perform until her death in 1978. Mother Maybelle Carter was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970. She was also inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 1991. At the time of her death, Mother Maybelle Carter had an estimated net worth of $2 million.

The Carter Family is believed to be the first commercial rural country music group. Maybelle played the guitar, autoharp and banjo, and created a unique sound for the group.
