Moti Tikaram was a Fijian politician and civil servant who served as the first Prime Minister of Fiji from 1970 to 1987. He was born in Lami, Fiji, on 18 March 1925. He was educated at the University of the South Pacific and the University of London. Tikaram was a member of the Alliance Party, which was formed in 1968. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1970 and was appointed Prime Minister in the same year. He served as Prime Minister until 1987, when he was replaced by Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Tikaram was a strong advocate for Fijian independence and was instrumental in the negotiations that led to Fiji's independence in 1970. He was also a strong supporter of the Fijian language and culture, and was a key figure in the development of the Fijian Constitution. Tikaram was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1971 and the Order of Fiji in 1987. He died on 8 April 2020 at the age of 95.
