He is also a playwright and has written several plays in both Gikuyu and English. Gatheru was born in the village of Kiambu, near Nairobi, Kenya. He attended Alliance High School and later studied at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a degree in English literature. Gatheru has written several books in Gikuyu, including the novel Mwenda wa Kigogo (The Story of Kigogo), which was published in 1965. He has also written several plays in both Gikuyu and English, including the play Mwihoko (The Witch), which was performed in Nairobi in 1967. Gatheru has received numerous awards for his work, including the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature in 1975 and the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya in 2002.
