Murray A. Straus was an American sociologist and professor emeritus at the University of New Hampshire. He was a pioneer in the field of family violence research and was best known for his work on the prevalence and consequences of physical punishment of children. He was the co-founder of the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire and the co-director of the National Family Violence Surveys. Straus was born in New York City on June 18, 1926. He received his bachelor's degree from the City College of New York in 1947 and his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1949. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1952. Straus was a professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire from 1965 until his retirement in 1996. He was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan, and the University of Hawaii. Straus was the author of more than 200 articles and books on family violence, including the book "Beating the Devil Out of Them: Corporal Punishment in American Families" (1973). He was a recipient of the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy in 1994. At the time of his death in 2016, Straus was 90 years old.

Murray Arnold Straus (June 18, 1926 – May 13, 2016) was an American professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire. He is best known for creating the conflict tactics scale, the "most widely used instrument in research on family violence".

Straus was born to Samuel and Kathleen Straus in New York City on June 18, 1926. Straus' research focused on families, corporal punishment, and intimate partner violence with an emphasis on cross-national comparisons. He founded the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire. Straus served as president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (1989–90) and the Eastern Sociological Society (1991–92). He was also a founding editor of the peer-review academic journals Teaching Sociology and Journal of Family Issues.
