Myles Brand was an American academic and college sports administrator who served as the president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 2003 to 2009. He was the first philosopher to lead the NCAA. Brand was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 17, 1942. He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Rutgers University in 1964 and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Rochester in 1970. Brand began his career as a professor of philosophy at the University of Arizona in 1970. He was appointed president of Indiana University in 1994, where he served until 2002. During his tenure, he was credited with increasing the university's endowment and improving its academic reputation. In 2003, Brand was appointed president of the NCAA, where he served until his death in 2009. During his tenure, he was credited with reforming the NCAA's enforcement process and increasing the organization's focus on academic integrity. He also worked to improve the NCAA's relationship with its member institutions. Brand died on September 16, 2009, at the age of 67, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was survived by his wife, Patricia, and their two children.
