He is best known for his work in algebraic number theory and algebraic geometry. Ankeny received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1949 and his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1952. He was a professor at the University of Washington from 1952 to 1992. Ankeny has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Science in 1989 and the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the American Mathematical Society in 2000. Ankeny is married to his wife, Mary, and has two children.
