Newton Perera is a Sri Lankan politician and former Member of Parliament. He was born on 8 July 1954 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Perera. He completed his primary and secondary education at St. Joseph's College, Colombo. He then went on to pursue a degree in Law from the University of Colombo. Newton Perera was first elected to Parliament in 1989 and served as a Member of Parliament for the United National Party (UNP) until 2001. He was appointed as the Minister of Education in 1994 and held the post until 1997. He was re-elected to Parliament in 2004 and served as the Minister of Education from 2004 to 2005. He was also appointed as the Minister of Higher Education from 2005 to 2006. Newton Perera is currently the Chairman of the United National Party (UNP). He is also the Chairman of the National Education Commission and the Chairman of the National Education Council. Newton Perera is 66 years old as of 2021.
