Durante was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on 13 September 1956. He holds a degree in business administration from the University of São Paulo and an MBA from the University of Michigan. Durante began his career in the tobacco industry in 1981, when he joined Souza Cruz. He held various positions at the company, including as the CEO from 1998 to 2009. In 2009, he joined Philip Morris International as the president of its Latin American operations. In 2011, Durante was appointed as the CEO of British American Tobacco. He has since been responsible for the company's global operations, including its research and development, marketing, and manufacturing. Durante is a member of the board of directors of the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance and the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business.
