Nicolae Filip was born into a family of Romanian peasants. He attended school in his hometown of Sofia, and later studied at the University of Bucharest. After graduating, he worked as a teacher in various schools in Romania. In the 1950s, he became involved in politics and was elected to the Romanian Parliament in 1957. He served as a member of the Romanian Communist Party and was a member of the Central Committee from 1965 to 1989. In 1989, he was appointed Prime Minister of Romania and served until 1991. During his tenure, he implemented a number of economic reforms and oversaw the transition from a communist to a democratic system. In 1992, he was appointed Ambassador to the United Nations and served until 1997. He was also a member of the International Court of Justice from 1997 to 2003.
