He is the son of Ralph Lawson and Joan Elisa Davis. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. Lawson began his career as a journalist, working for The Spectator and The Sunday Telegraph. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1974 as a Conservative MP for Blaby. He served as Secretary of State for Energy from 1981 to 1983, and then as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1983 to 1989. Lawson is best known for his economic policies, which included the introduction of the poll tax, the privatization of state-owned industries, and the deregulation of the financial sector.
