Nikolay Vatolin was born on 13 November, 1926 in Russia. He was a Soviet military leader and politician who served as the Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union from 1984 to 1987. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1952 until his death in 1991. Vatolin was born in the village of Krasnaya Sloboda in the Kursk Oblast of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. He joined the Red Army in 1944 and served in World War II. After the war, he attended the Frunze Military Academy and the General Staff Academy. Vatolin rose through the ranks of the Soviet military, eventually becoming a Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1985. He was appointed Minister of Defense in 1984, and served in that position until 1987. He was also a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from 1979 to 1989. Vatolin died in 1991 at the age of 65. He was buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow.
