She started her career as a stage actress in the 1940s and made her debut in the film industry with the film 'Basant' in 1942. She went on to act in over 50 films in her career. Nirmala Devi was known for her roles in films such as 'Basant', 'Chandralekha', 'Barsaat', 'Awaara', 'Anarkali', 'Mother India', 'Gunga Jumna', 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai', 'Mere Mehboob', 'Jab Jab Phool Khile', 'Teesri Kasam', 'Khandan', 'Amar Akbar Anthony', 'Kabhi Kabhie', 'Namak Halaal', 'Sholay' and 'Chupke Chupke'.
