He studied photography at Chiba University and began his career as a commercial photographer in the 1960s. He has since become one of the most influential photographers in Japan. Araki's work often focuses on themes of death, sex, and love. He has photographed many of his own family members, including his wife, Yoko, who died in 1990. He has also photographed celebrities such as Björk and Lady Gaga. Araki has received numerous awards for his work, including the Hasselblad Award in 2003 and the Photographic Society of Japan's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
