Oben Gunderson Jr. is a former North Dakota state senator and a member of the Republican Party. He was born in McCanna, North Dakota, on May 6, 1927. He attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a degree in political science. Gunderson was first elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1972 and served until his retirement in 1996. During his time in the Senate, he served as the Majority Leader from 1979 to 1984 and as the Minority Leader from 1985 to 1996. He was also a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1967 to 1972. Gunderson was a strong advocate for education and was instrumental in the passage of the North Dakota Education Improvement Act of 1985. He also supported the development of the North Dakota State University Research and Technology Park. Gunderson is married to his wife, Mary, and has two children.
