Oscar Beregi Sr. was a Hungarian-born actor who had a long and successful career in both Europe and the United States. He was born in Budapest on 24 January 1876 and began his acting career in the early 1900s. He appeared in numerous films and plays throughout his career, including the classic silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). He also appeared in the first sound film ever made, The Jazz Singer (1927). In the United States, Beregi Sr. appeared in a number of films, including The Invisible Man (1933), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and The Wizard of Oz (1939). He also had a successful career on Broadway, appearing in such plays as The Merchant of Venice (1930) and The Petrified Forest (1935). Beregi Sr. was married twice and had two children. He died in Los Angeles on 28 April 1949 at the age of 73.
