His works have been performed by Anton Kuerti, Zubin Mehta, Glenn Gould, Ben Heppner, Maureen Forrester, and Yo-Yo Ma. Many of his works have been recorded on major labels. A seven-disc anthology was issued by the CBC in 1984. He was awarded the Order of Canada, among many other honors. He gave his last performance as a pianist in 1992.

1940

He moved to Canada in 1940 to escape the Nazi occupation. He studied at the University of Toronto; later, he was professor of composition there. He became one of Canada's best-known classical composers. His career spanned more than 50 years, during which he wrote over 100 works for orchestra and chamber ensembles. He had an encyclopedic memory of the classical music literature, and refused to be swayed by current trends in composing.
