He is best known for his work on the films “The Orphanage” (2007), “The Impossible” (2012), and “The Book of Life” (2014). Santos began his career as an assistant director in the late 1990s, working on films such as “The Devil’s Backbone” (2001) and “Talk to Her” (2002). He made his directorial debut with the short film “The Sea Inside” (2004), which won the Goya Award for Best Short Film. In 2007, Santos wrote and directed his first feature film, “The Orphanage”, which was a critical and commercial success. The film was nominated for seven Goya Awards, including Best Film, and won four. In 2012, Santos wrote and directed “The Impossible”, a drama based on the true story of a family’s survival during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Naomi Watts. In 2014, Santos wrote and directed “The Book of Life”, an animated adventure comedy. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Santos has also written and directed several television series, including “The Ministry of Time” (2015-2017) and “The Pier” (2018-2019).
