Otis Spann was an American blues musician, singer, and songwriter. He was born on March 21, 1930 in Jackson, Mississippi. He was best known for his work as a pianist and vocalist with Muddy Waters' band in the 1950s and 1960s. He was also a solo artist, recording several albums for Chess Records and other labels. Spann began playing piano at the age of five and was performing professionally by the age of fourteen. He moved to Chicago in 1950 and soon joined Muddy Waters' band, playing on several of Waters' classic recordings. He also recorded several solo albums, including The Blues Never Die (1962), The Bottom of the Blues (1964), and Otis Spann Is the Blues (1966). Spann was an influential figure in the blues world, and his influence can be heard in the work of many modern blues musicians. He died of cancer on April 24, 1970 in Chicago, Illinois. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980.
