He was a leader in the civil rights movement, working with the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was also a member of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who were the first to integrate the city's public schools. In the 1960s, Sutton became a professor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he taught journalism and African-American studies. He also served as the university's first African-American vice chancellor.
