Partha Chatterjee is an Indian politician and the current Minister of Education in the Government of West Bengal. He is a member of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and a former member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was born on 6 October 1952 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Chatterjee completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calcutta in 1974 and his Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the same university in 1976. He then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Political Science from the University of Calcutta in 1981. Chatterjee began his political career in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the late 1970s. He was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1982 and served as a minister in the Left Front government from 1987 to 2011. He was also the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, Chatterjee joined the All India Trinamool Congress and was appointed as the Minister of Education in the Government of West Bengal. He is currently serving in this position.
