Patty Donahue was an American singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of the new wave band The Waitresses. She was born on March 29, 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of a steelworker and a homemaker. Donahue began her career as a singer in the late 1970s, performing in local Cleveland clubs. She was discovered by Chris Butler, who was looking for a female vocalist for his new band, The Waitresses. Donahue joined the band in 1980 and recorded their debut album, Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? The album was a success, spawning the hit single "I Know What Boys Like". Donahue continued to record and tour with The Waitresses until the band's breakup in 1984. She then pursued a solo career, releasing her debut solo album, Patty Donahue, in 1986. The album was not a commercial success, and Donahue soon returned to The Waitresses, who reunited in 1987. Donahue continued to record and tour with The Waitresses until her death in 1996. She died of lung cancer at the age of 40. At the time of her death, Donahue had an estimated net worth of $2 million.

On December 9, 1996, Donahue, who had been a heavy smoker most of her adult life, died of lung cancer in New York at the age of 40. Donahue was interred in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park, a suburb of Cleveland.

Donahue met Chris Butler while at Kent State. Butler was in the art rock band Tin Huey but he had written a number of songs that were not used in their repertoire. As he later explained in the liner notes of The Best of the Waitresses (1990), he met Donahue in a barroom challenge: "One day I write this song, and then it's noon and the liquid lunchers are packed into a  ... bar. I stand on a chair and bang a beer bottle for attention and declare: 'I need a chanteuse to coo a tune. The song is funny and stupid and cool and different, and is anybody interested?' A voice in the back says 'uh-huh.' It's Patty."
