He was a student of the renowned composer Max Bruch. In 1933, he was forced to flee Nazi Germany and moved to Palestine, where he changed his name to Paul Ben Haim. He became a professor at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and was appointed director of the Academy in 1945. He composed a wide range of works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and choral works. He was also a prolific composer of Israeli folk music. His works are characterized by a combination of traditional Jewish and Middle Eastern elements with modern Western classical music. Paul Ben Haim died in 1984 in Jerusalem. He was 87 years old.
