Paul Bernardo is a Canadian serial killer and rapist who committed a series of rapes and murders in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada, between 1990 and 1992. He was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated sexual assault, and one count of kidnapping in 1995. He is currently serving a life sentence in prison. Bernardo was born in Scarborough, Ontario, to Kenneth and Marilyn Bernardo. He was the eldest of three children. His parents divorced when he was 12 years old. Bernardo attended Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, where he was a good student and a member of the school's debating team. He graduated in 1982 and went on to attend the University of Toronto Scarborough, where he studied accounting. Bernardo met Karla Homolka in 1987, and the two began a relationship. In 1990, Bernardo and Homolka began a series of rapes and murders in the Greater Toronto Area. The victims were Leslie Mahaffy, Kristen French, and Homolka's sister Tammy. Bernardo was arrested in 1993 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated sexual assault, and one count of kidnapping. In 1995, Bernardo was convicted of all charges and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years. He is currently serving his sentence at the Millhaven Institution in Bath, Ontario.
