Paul Kipsiele Koech is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He is the former world record holder in the event, having set a time of 7:53.63 in 2004. He is a two-time world champion in the event, having won gold medals at the 2003 and 2005 World Championships in Athletics. He also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. Koech was born in Kapsabet, Kenya, on 10 November 1981. He began his career as a cross country runner, winning the Kenyan junior title in 1999. He made his international debut in 2000, competing in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the World Junior Championships in Athletics. He won the silver medal at the event, finishing behind compatriot Richard Mateelong. Koech established himself as one of the world's best steeplechasers in 2003, winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Athletics. He went on to win the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, and set a new world record of 7:53.63 in the event in 2004. He won his second world title in 2005, and also won the gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Koech has since retired from competitive athletics, but remains active in the sport as a coach. He is currently the head coach of the Kenyan national team. He is married to fellow Kenyan athlete, Vivian Cheruiyot, and the couple have two children.

In February 2010 he set a world best of 5:17.04 in the rarely competed 2000 m indoor steeplechase. He won twice in the 2010 Diamond League and finished with enough points to become the inaugural steeplechase Diamond Trophy winner. He improved his indoor 2000 m steeplechase record to 5:13.77 at the Indoor Flanders Meeting in February 2011.

He was born in 1981 in Kapchepkoro, near Sotik town, Sotik District. He graduated from Cheplanget Secondary School in 1999. He did well at the National Cross Country Championships and was subsequently invited to compete in Europe and joined a team managed by James Templeton.
