Paul Lokiru Kalanda was a Ugandan politician and diplomat who served as the first Prime Minister of Uganda from 1962 to 1966. He was born in Masaka, Uganda, to a family of the Basoga tribe. He attended Makerere University in Kampala, where he studied law and economics. Kalanda was a prominent member of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) and was appointed Prime Minister in 1962. He served in this position until 1966, when he was replaced by Milton Obote. He then served as Uganda's ambassador to the United Kingdom and the United Nations. Kalanda was a strong advocate for African unity and was a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). He was also a member of the International Court of Justice from 1967 to 1972. Kalanda died in London in 2002 at the age of 75. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
