He is the founder and owner of Fungi Perfecti, LLC, a company specializing in the cultivation of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. He is also the author of six books on mushroom cultivation and identification, and has been featured in numerous documentaries and television shows. Stamets was born in Columbiana, Ohio, and grew up in the nearby town of Salem. He attended the University of Washington, where he earned a degree in environmental science and forestry. After graduating, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture. Stamets has been researching and cultivating mushrooms since the early 1980s. He has developed several mushroom cultivation techniques, including the use of sawdust and wood chips as a substrate for growing mushrooms. He has also developed a method for using mushrooms to clean up contaminated soil and water.
