Paul Wiegmann is a Russian-born German physicist and professor at the University of Chicago. He is known for his work in condensed matter physics, particularly in the areas of quantum phase transitions and topological phases of matter. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Wiegmann was born in Ryazan, Russia, in 1952. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from Moscow State University in 1975 and his PhD in physics from the Institute of Solid State Physics in Moscow in 1979. He then moved to the United States, where he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley from 1979 to 1981. In 1981, Wiegmann joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, where he is currently a professor of physics. He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of California, San Diego. Wiegmann has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Oliver E. Buckley Prize of the American Physical Society in 1998, the Fritz London Memorial Prize in 2002, and the Dirac Medal of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in 2004.
