Paulin Soumanou Vieyra was born in Novo, French West Africa (now Benin) on 31 January 1925. He was a film director, producer, and writer. He was one of the first African filmmakers to gain international recognition. Vieyra studied at the University of Dakar in Senegal and then at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques in Paris. He began his career as a film critic and then moved into filmmaking. His first feature film, Afrique-sur-Seine (1956), was the first feature film made in French West Africa. Vieyra's films often focused on the struggles of African people in the face of colonialism and racism. He was a vocal critic of French colonialism and its effects on African people. His films were often banned in France and other countries. Vieyra's other films include Mandabi (1968), which was the first African film to be nominated for an Academy Award, and La Noire de... (1966), which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Vieyra died in Paris on 15 April 2020 at the age of 95.
