In 1983, he was elected to the House of Commons as the MP for Portsmouth North. Griffiths served as a minister in the Department of Health and Social Security from 1987 to 1989. He was also a member of the Select Committee on Social Security from 1989 to 1992. Griffiths was a strong advocate for the rights of disabled people and was a vocal opponent of the poll tax.
