He then moved to Nike, where he was the European Marketing Director. In 1997, Kenyon was appointed as the Chief Executive of Manchester United. He also helped to secure the club's first Premier League title in 1999. In 2003, Kenyon left Manchester United to become the Chief Executive of Chelsea Football Club. 2014

On 22 September 2014, an investigation by The Guardian implicated Kenyon and Portuguese superagent Jorge Mendes in breaching FIFA regulations regarding third-party ownership and conflict of interest in player representation, buying player rights through companies based in Jersey and Ireland. The Guardian also published a detailed report showing Kenyon's ex-club Chelsea have invested in third party ownership via Mendes and Kenyon, a practice banned by the Premier League. Chelsea declined to comment on the accusations. Kenyon at the time of writing is also a non executive director at Championship club Middlesbrough. Kenyon’s contacts enabled ‘Boro to sign former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel on a short term deal until the end of the 2017/18 season, to which Mikel scored his only goal in a 1-2 win for Middlesbrough v Rotherham.

Kenyon was influential in persuading long-serving manager Alex Ferguson to remain at the club despite Ferguson's original intention to retire in 2002. One of the other notable aspects of Kenyon's time in charge was the fact that the club dismissed their rigid wage structure and spent large sums of money on players such as Juan Sebastián Verón and Rio Ferdinand.
