Peter Stein (legal scholar) is a British legal scholar and professor emeritus of law at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. Born in Liverpool in 1926, Stein was educated at the University of Liverpool and the University of Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1948 and a Bachelor of Civil Law in 1950. He was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1951. Stein was a lecturer in law at the University of Oxford from 1954 to 1962, and a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, from 1962 to 1967. He was appointed a professor of law at the University of Oxford in 1967, and held the post until his retirement in 1991. Stein has written extensively on the law of trusts, and is the author of the leading textbook on the subject, The Law of Trusts (Oxford University Press, 8th ed. 2020).
