Peter Thornton is a British historian and author who was born on 8 April 1925. He is best known for his work on the history of architecture and the decorative arts. He studied at the University of Cambridge, where he received his BA in 1947 and his MA in 1950. He then went on to teach at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he was a professor from 1965 to 1990. He has written numerous books on the history of architecture and the decorative arts, including The Italian Renaissance Interior, 1400-1600 (1991), The Italian Renaissance Garden (1995), and The Italian Renaissance Palace (1999). He has also written extensively on the history of the British country house, including The British Country House in the Eighteenth Century (1985) and The British Country House in the Nineteenth Century (1989). He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
