He is the author of seven books, including the memoir 7 Tattoos: A Memoir in the Flesh, and the essay collection The Book of Calamities: Five Questions About Suffering and Its Meaning. He has also written for The New Yorker, Harper's, The New York Times Magazine, and other publications. Trachtenberg is a professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh, where he teaches creative writing and literature. He has also taught at the University of Iowa, the University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan. Trachtenberg is married to the writer and editor Elissa Schappell. They have two children.
